Green Energy
Preserve The Environment
It’s becoming more and more popular to “Go Green,” but people sometimes forget what going green really means. Traditional fossil fuel power generation sources such as coal and natural gas emit tens of millions of tons CO2 annually. Wind energy provides us with the opportunity to reduce our use of these traditional generating plants, and reducing CO2 emissions and our dependency on fossil fuels provides our children with a more promising future.
The current administration has stated it will ensure that, at a minimum, 10% of electricity is generated by renewable energy in the U.S. by 2012 and 25% by 2025. While technologies are improving in other renewable energy sectors, wind energy is the only economical “shovel ready” solution to supply meaningful amounts of the new renewable energy generation required to meet the coming standards. Wind power has proven to be the most economically efficient source of renewable energy, competing favorably with traditional natural gas fired generation.
The Facts
Consider this -- a typical 1.5 megawatt wind turbine provides power to over 400 American households. That means an average sized wind farm of 100 of these turbines can provide power to over 40,000 households simply by harnessing the energy of the same wind we feel blowing across our faces every day. In so doing, we are drastically cutting the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere and ensuring that future generations will not suffer as a result of our impetus. According to a report by the American Wind Energy Association, plants installed in 2008 alone will avoid over 40 million tons of carbon emissions, accomplishing the same environmental effect as removing 7 million cars from the road.
